California Young Reader Medal Award Winners

 for 2008 - 2009

Members of the California Young Reader Medal Committee are pleased to announce this year's winners of the award in the following categories:

Primary Category:                                   Stanley's Wild Ride by Linda Bailey

Intermediate Category:                          Sheep by Valerie Hobbs

Middle School/Junior High Category:  Heat  by Mike Lupica

Young Adult Category:                     Sold by Patricia McCormick

Picture Books for Older Readers:       Mystery at the Club Sandwich by Doug Cushman

The California Young Reader Medal is sponsored by four California professional organizations dedicated to the promotion of literacy: California Association of Teachers of English, California Library Association, California School Library Association and California Reading Association. It is unique in that students are at the center of this recreational reading program. Each year, seventeen books, nominated by students, are designated into five categories. Students are then invited to read all the nominees from any given category and vote for their favorite. Finally, students present the medal to the winning authors and illustrators during one of the sponsoring organizations' conference.
