FAMILY LITERACY NIGHT

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the National Assessment on Educational Progress (NAEP), that one of the best predictors of a child's academic success is parent literacy level. Schools around California host Family Literacy Nights to build strong home-school connections. The California Reading Association has products to help you create a successful Family Literacy Night:

  • Building Literacy: Making Every Child a Reader is organized around five strands: oral language, listening and speaking; awareness of sound, symbol, and structure; skills integration; reading comprehension strategies; and writing, vocabulary and spelling. Each component is defined with specific implementation ideas/strategies for each grade level. Connections between language arts and other content areas are also made. A vignette for both a primary and intermediate classroom is included to demonstrate how each strategy can be implemented. A glossary of terms/formats and an extensive bibliography is also included.

  • The CRA Parent Intervention Packet was created to provide teachers with concrete one-on-one activities that parents can do with their children. This includes letter formation, letter identification, concepts about print, phonemic awareness. phonics, and high frequency words.

Use ideas from these products to provide engaging mini lessons on your Family Literacy Night, and give families ideas for how to promote literacy at home.
