This award was established in honor of the late Dr. Armin R. Schulz whose passion for literature inspired all that he touched. Of special interest to Dr. Schulz was literature that promoted social justice. With that in mind, the purpose of this award is to recognize a teacher who uses literature to teach or an author who writes books that promote social justice (which is viewed as promoting that all persons, irrespective of ethnic origin, gender, possessions, race, religion, etc., are to be treated equally and without prejudice).
Any California teacher who uses literature to teach or any author who writes books that promote social justice.
The nominee’s use of literature to promote social justice
The use of that literature within a classroom in California
The nominee’s superiority over all potential nominees throughout the state
The recipient will:
Receive an individual plaque presented at the CRA Professional Development Institute
Be honored at an appropriate function at the CRA Professional Development Institute
CRA members submit names to local councils
Each local council may submit one nomination by
Filling out the nomination form
Writing a letter in support of the nominee
Providing an up-to-date resume on the nominee’s background, education, professional experience, and publications (where appropriate)
After reviewing all nominations, the Citations and Awards Committee shall submit the name of the proposed recipient to the CRA Board.
The CRA Board of Directors has the final responsibility in the selection of the Armin R. Schulz Literacy Award.
