Celebrations and Awards

Teaching and learning is hard work. The educational community deals with pressures such as accountability, budget, and time constraints. Administrators, teachers, students, parents, community partners, and policymakers need consistent recognition for their rigorous efforts.

The school culture should be created to celebrate one another’s part in education. Celebrations and awards must be meaningful and seriously given and received. They should be carefully planned and not detract from instructional time. For example, administrators may personally visit each classroom to recognize deserving students and teachers without using time-consuming assemblies. Recognition should be widely distributed and clearly communicated so that populations not usually addressed are included, thus widening positive partnerships.

Criteria can be, but not limited to extraordinary service, outstanding dedication and contributions, effective leadership, scholarship and excellence, inspirational role model, positive effects on students or peers, high quality delivery of information for others to use for improving instruction and learning, positive, quality, and unbiased work, intergenerational exchanges, and proven results.

Educators must be aware of the following:

The California Reading Association supports the inclusion of celebrations and awards in the classrooms and schools throughout the state as a means for promoting a quality teaching and learning community. Local councils are encouraged to reach out to schools and the community to celebrate service and contributions that positively impact teaching and learning.
