Early Intervention

The children entering California schools bring a wide variety of experiences, languages, cultures and religions into the classroom. While this diversity provides opportunities for rich learning, it also necessitates instruction that meets a wide variety of needs. Teaching Reading (1996) and other state documents share the following information about California children:

Early intervention is an approach that helps students overcome learning problems before ineffective learning strategies have been habituated and the student's self-esteem is affected. The goal is to build a child's confidence in his/her independent reading/writing ability and to make the student an active participant in instruction.  Successful early intervention models, contrasted with remedial programs, which are always much less successful, need to:

Various intervention programs have different foci. For example, Reading Recovery has as its goal the acceleration of the lowest achieving children to average performance of children at their grade level. Early Intervention School Success' goal is to help young children become successful learners and thinkers. Success for All's goal is to do whatever is necessary to see that every child makes it through third grade at or near grade level in reading and other basic skills. Other intervention programs (national and district-created) have their own specific criteria.

As the mission of the California Reading Association is to serve as a professional educational network advocating literacy for children and adults, the organization embraces those instructional approaches that support its goals. Early intervention increases the likelihood of a child's literacy development.
