Electronic technology affects cultural shifts as significant as those after the printing press adoption. Computers, access to the Internet, interactive media, and network systems are pervasive in our culture. The impact of technology is obvious.

Society’s expectation of the integration and availability of technology in the classroom is increasing. Students arrive in our classrooms with backgrounds and familiarity with computers and yet California schools struggle to provide student access to computer technology.

Teachers use technology to strengthen language arts instruction. Additionally technology accommodates diverse learning styles and special needs, fosters individualization of content and pace of instruction, provides immediate feedback, and promotes risk-taking. Technology empowers students as learners to assume responsibility for a larger part of their own learning experience. 

Technology dramatically increases student access to information. Networks enhance communication between various groups: student-student, student-teacher, teacher-parent, and school-community. In addition, networks allow students access to information across the nation and around the world.

Technology is an exciting challenge for future directions in education.  

Students and teachers must b e held accountable for implementing technology standards and benchmarks.  Educators must also be aware of the following:

The California Reading Association supports the inclusion of technology in the classrooms and schools throughout the state as a means for accessing and sharing information as well as a means to implement standards
